The emblem of Skierniewice

  Skierniewice situated in north-easten part of the Lodz Region between two Polish urban areas: Warsaw and Lodz. The town covers 33 km2 and is inhabited by 49015 people. The town is fovourable locoted with respect to the main national routes what provides national and international railway connections, also the mainroads leads to the east Poland's border (Terespol), the west Poland's border (Swiecko), the south Poland's border (Cieszyn).

   Skierniewice posses an old and historical-worth tradition. The town was founded in 1457 by Archibishop Jan Odrowaz of Sprowa. The location was apporoved by the King Kazimierz Jagiellonczyk in 1463.
Market Squere    Till present days there has been preserved a historically-shaped special structure of the town and numerous monuments like the complex mansion of Gniezno bishops with a great park, the Roman Churches, the Town Hall, the Railway Station, the Skierniewice Regional Council, the steam engine service station, the barracs and many residential buildings. Almost all the monumental objects are grouped in the heart of the town. They form two distinct complexes: The Market Squere with the Town Hall and nearby residential-service buildings, the mansion complex of the park. Close to them, there can be found the railway function complex of the former Warsaw-Wien connection. In 1867 the town became the seat of the District Council and acted these dutes until 1975 when it changed into the capital of Skierniewice Provience. Nowadays Skierniewice underwent yhe administration partition and it became an administrative unit.

   Skierniewice is also a significant place of the concentration of business companies. Almost 15 thousands of people found employment in local administration. Most of them are employed in the fields of production, health and social care, transport and communication, trade and repairs, education, and in construction industry and firm service.



   There is also a seat of two national institutes which receive wide recognition in Poland and other countries.

Institute of Fruit and Vegetables

    They are: the Research Institute of Fruit and Flowers' Prodiction and the Research Institute of Vegetables' Production. Deep Studies on new plant species are being carried out by the scientists in the above mentioned institutes. These institutions co-operate with numerous research institutes in Poland and other coutries. The result of their co-operation are presented in specialist conferences, symposiums, and seminars. These institutions also carry out publishing, specialist guidance and counselling. They arrange demostrations and exhibitions of their achievements in the fields of research.

   Moreover, Skierniewice is a seat of Experimental Field connected with Katedra Chemii Rolniczej Main School of Farming. Which covers the area of 28 ha. It was established in1921 and it remains as one of the oldest object in Poland. It is also the seventh in Europe and nineth in the World as far as its long-lasting is concerned. It co-operates with many similar research institutions in Europe. In the autumn of 1999 there were finished works connected with the modernisation of the reservoir on the Łupia river called "Zadebie". You can practice there water Sports such as rowing and canocing. There have been started works connected with recreational and leisure developing of the riverside of the reservoir "Zadebie".

    Futhermore, the town has been co-operated with two cities: Gera in Germany since 1976 and Chatelaillon in France since 1990. After signing Akt Zbratania (in 1994 in France and in 1995 in skierniewice) Chatelaillon and Skierniewice were listed by the European Union as twin towns and their projects are founded by the European Commission.
